1980s

​By the 1980s, the landscape surrounding transgender healthcare had changed. What was once hopeful optimism had turned towards gatekeeping. Many of the university programs that had been serving transgender patients had closed their gender identity clinics. Notable among these was John Hopkins University; once at the forefront of  transgender healthcare, by 1979, they had pivoted to less affirming methods of care.
